The trendy Zara origami skort: countless fashion enthusiasts either own one in their closet or have seen it over who knows how many times in the past season. Some people love it and some people hate it, but it is definitely a basic statement piece that you can dress to your style easily. I wanted to add my own twist to the skort, which is by using overalls to create that unique origami layered look.

You will need:

1. Your choice of overalls. I thrifted these black velvet ones for $1.50!

2. Drafting or wrapping paper to make your pattern

3. Pins and needles

4. Something to make marks with, such as a white crayon or chalk.

5. Measuring tape

6. Scissors

7. Sewing machine (or hand sewing if you prefer)

Time: About 30 minutes - 1 hour

Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate

First off, cut off the overall's legs to your desired shorts length. Do not throw away the left over fabric from the legs! Then, make a "V" shaped as shown above. To make sure it's centered, I lined up the point of the "V" with the belt loops.

Cut it out and hem your ends.

It should end up looking something like this.

Next, make your pattern piece as shown above to finish off the "origami" look. Make sure it's equal, and line up the "V" points!

From the left over fabric from the pants legs, (you may have to cut open the fabric's legs to make it wider) cut out the piece with your pattern, and remember to add seam allowance. Then, hem your edges!

Pin your piece to the overalls & sew! If you're going to go over a pocket like how I did, make sure you leave an opening on that side or you'll close it up. Refer to the diagram above if you need help understanding what I mean.

Final product! :)

This clothing piece is definitely a super cute addition to my closet. Perfect for lazy school days if I want to throw something on, or a comfortable item to wear when I'm roaming around Disneyland! The outfit combinations with this DIY is endless, and it doesn't even have to be with just velvet overalls -- you can even use denim, which I think would look twice as amazing!
